Marmitte dei Giganti or Canyon Marmitte dei Giganti is a sculpted river canyon that clear pools mark and is located in Le Marche Italy, in the province of Pesaro and Urbino.
This impressive geological wonder is a spectacular place to visit in Le Marche: here there’s no lack of fun, and it’s a perfect place to admire its scenic beauty while taking a canoe trip.
Located near Fossombrone, the Marmitte dei Giganti (meaning “Giants’ Pots”) will impress you with its tall rock walls, molded by millennia of water action from the Metauro River which created an undulating gorge. The transparent river cuts through the rocks, making a unique and gorgeous landscape.
Paths run from the bridge Diocleziano to the Metauro river, while others skirt the canyon and climb up the mountains. Nature lovers and outdoors enthusiasts will love this area for the range of hiking trails, and river kayaking experiences.
Marmitte dei Giganti is just a few kilometers from the village of Fossombrone, and it’s near Acqualagna (famous for truffles production) and Urbino (Renaissance art city).

Kayak and Canoe Excursions in Marche Italy: Happy River
There are many wonderful locations to enjoy kayaking and canoeing in Marche and Marmitte dei Giganti is one of my favorite places!
Paddling trips aren’t about what happens in the boat, but they’re about the entire experience. Nature lovers enjoy the ideal scenery with guided excursions organized by Happy River. If you already have experience, it’s also possible to rent a kayak without a guide.
At the end of this stunning path on the river, there’s a small fall where you can dive: I loved it!
Natalia and Marco are the owners, and Natalia is a Technical Instructor of the Italian Canoe Kayak Federation with a naturalistic specialization. She organizes courses on canoeing for adults, teenagers, and children and improvement sessions for practitioners and agonists.

Kayaking in Marmitte dei Giganti with kids
The river is flat, and the activity is suitable for everyone, families with children included. I have been there with my husband and kids (11 and 8 years old), and we had so much fun together! It’s possible to have a double kayak, which means that you can bring your kid with you. Everybody needs to wear a life vest and a helmet, and before starting it Natalia or Marco, the owners will explain the details to you, but the activity is very simple and fun!
Join Happy River for the best canyoning and kayaking outdoor activities in the most beautiful natural surroundings in Marmitte dei Giganti.

What to wear while kayaking in Marmitte dei Giganti

Where to park: Marmitte dei Giganti
The meeting point for excursions is inside the Happy River private parking, in Via Cattedrale in Fossombrone (along the old Strada Statale 3 Flaminia), which is a few hundred meters from the “Fossombrone Ovest” exit of the Fano-Grosseto highway.
You go down the river through an easy path until you find yourself at the entrance to the canyon where, after the theoretical notions about the excursion and the equipment, the canoe excursion will start.
The Diocletian Bridge (or Ponte dei Saltelli) that crosses the canyon is about 500 meters away and can be reached by continuing to San Lazzaro and turning left towards Bellaguardia – San Gervasio – San Martino dei Muri.
If you don’t participate in the excursion, you need to park near the river. However, remember to pay attention during the high season (July and August) because parking there can be tricky.

Where to eat near Marmitte dei Giganti
If you love truffles and exquisite cuisine, I recommend the restaurant Braceria Plinc in Acqualagna (10 minutes by car). It’s fabulous!
